外務省の内局にあって、世界の軍縮問題や核兵器、化学兵器、生物兵器、ミサイル等の大量破壊兵器(WMD)の拡散について研究し、それを日本の外交政策に組み込む任務を担当しているのが、「軍縮不拡散・科学部」であり、21世紀を見据えた重要な部署です。

総合外交政策局に組織され、「軍縮管理軍縮課」と「不拡散・科学原子力課」の2課で構成されています。

軍縮や原子力の専門家が揃っていて、常に世界の軍縮や大量破壊兵器などの研究・分析に取り組んでいるのです。

各方面から注目されているこの軍縮不拡散・科学部は、外務省が重要課題の一つとして推進している「国際社会の平和と安定」に向けた取り組みを担って、その分野で主導的な役割を果たしているといえます。
